Provisional Membership

Who is it for?

Provisional Membership is designed for those who are new to being an expert witness, have completed core training, and would benefit from the support of more experienced Members and Fellows in providing advice on all aspects of being an expert.

What are the benefits?

As a Provisional Member, as well as other benefits, you will appear on the Find an Expert Directory as long as you have completed the required Core Training. This will support you in gaining experience as an Expert Witness; enabling you to upgrade to Individual Membership.

Provisional Members are usually expected to upgrade to Individual Membership within three years.

You are not entitled to use the Member logos.

How much does it cost?

Annual Fee 1/11/23-31/10/24*: £350 (£330 when you pay by direct debit)

*Annual fees will be calculated pro-rata. Our subscription year runs 1st November - 31st October.

How to apply

Please use the online application form to apply.

You will need to upload the following documents to the online application form:

  • Your Current CV
  • Proof of membership of appropriate regulatory body* (if such body exists) - This may be a certificate, screenshot of your existence on an online directory or a letter from your professional body confirming membership. EWI recognise that not all experts will have a professional body of which they can become a member.
*Please note: Psychologists need to be HCPC registered.
  • Proof of current professional indemnity insurance specifically for expert witness work
    • If you have Professional Indemnity Insurance for Expert Witness work in place, you will need to upload a copy of your schedule.

    • If you do not have Professional Indemnity Insurance for Expert Witness work, you can apply to become part of the EWI Block Policy with Hiscox through Horner Blakey Insurance Brokers. You will need to download the latest declaration form and then upload it as evidence of your Professional Indemnity Insurance. Once your application has been approved, we will pass your application over to Horner Blakey.

  • Proof of completion of core training - If you completed your Core Training with the EWI, you can use your Core Training Certificate. If you completed your training with another provider, we will need to see evidence you have completed training in Law for Experts, Report Writing and Discussions of Experts.
