The Expert Witness Institute supports experts from a diverse range of professions and offers several levels of membership categories designed to cater to you at every stage of your expert career.

Provisional Membership

For professionals of all disciplines who are new to expert witness work. This category of membership is suitable for experienced professionals who are new or who are relatively new to expert witness work. Upgrading to full individual membership is expected within two/three years of being accepted into the Institute. 

Requirements:

• Current CV
• Proof of membership of the appropriate regulatory/professional body
• Professional qualification appropriate to the applicant's discipline
• Proof of current professional indemnity insurance for expert witness work
• Completed application form

Application Fee:
 £70 (an additional £70 administration fee will become due when upgrading to Individual membership)
Annual subscription: £230; £220 if paid by direct debit

PROVISIONAL MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM

Individual Membership

For professionals of all disciplines who are already established as expert witnesses and can provide the required documentation.

Requirements:

• Current CV
• Proof of membership of the appropriate regulatory/professional body
• Professional qualifications appropriate to the applicant's discipline
• A CPR compliant anonymised expert witness report from a closed case
• Proof of current professional indemnity insurance for expert witness work
• Completed application form
• Three references from instructing solicitors

Application fee: £140
Annual subscription: £250; £240 if paid by direct debit

Fellow of the Institute

Fellow status is the highest category of individual membership and is only available to existing EWI individual members. Applicants for fellowship should understand that fellowship confers an obligation to play an active role in promoting the Institute and assisting in the training and encouragement of less experienced members. Fellowship applicants must be able to demonstrate a high personal standing within his/her profession or discipline, integrity and ability as a witness and a knowledge of the legal requirements placed on an expert witness.

Requirements:

• At least 10 years experience as an expert witness 
• Three sample reports
• A list of every occasion when you have given evidence in the last five years
• A summary of written evidence provided in the last ten years (listing cases by type of court/track/tribunal and claimant/defendant
• Cited references for reported cases
• A summary of work undertaken for pre-trial conferences, experts meetings and the number of cases where you were appointed as a single joint expert (including responding to written questions)
• Completed application form
• Three references from instructing solicitors

Annual subscription: £220; £210 if paid by direct debit

FELLOWSHIP APPLICATION FORM

Associate Membership

Associate member applicants should be a practicing solicitor, barrister or a member of a profession which in the ordinary course of business employs or consults experts. Applicants, being ineligible to apply for Individual or Provisional membership should actively support and participate in the objectives and activities of the Institute.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM

Retired Membership

The majority of EWI members who retire from their main profession often simultaneously retire from their expert witness practice. However we do find that members like to keep in contact with the Institute. By becoming a retired member you still receive all correspondence from the Institute including our newsletter, and have access to the website and discounted events.

Requirements:

• Notification that you have retired from your expert witness practice

Sabbatical Membership 

Individual and Provisional members of the Institute may from time to time wish to temporarily suspend their expert witness work.  This may be due to a number of reasons including, illness, maternity leave or working overseas.  Such members are permitted to suspend their usual membership in favour of Sabbatical membership. During a sabbatical membership, members are not entitled to use the EWI logo or post nominals and will pay a reduced subscription fee. Sabbatical member details do not appear on the EWI Expert directory.

Requirements: 

• Members should advise the EWI in writing of their intention to become a Sabbatical member along with a detailed explanation.

 Student Membership


EWI student membership is open to students who are currently studying as undergraduates or post graduates in a relevant course and not practising as an expert witness. Student members have access to the EWI membership area on the website and will receive the EWI newsletter and alerts. Student members will also benefit from discounts on training courses and events.

• Completed application form
